Freedom Narratives: Conversations about Religion, Spirituality, and Faith

Freedom Narratives: Conversations about Religion, Spirituality, and Faith will be the first in a series of films about ending racism, colorism, and oppression. Through this film, I’m planning to explore this question: What role does religion, spirituality, and faith play in ending the violence, injustice, and inequities we face today?
As the filmmaker, I plan to speak to faith leaders, scholars, activists, organizers and everyday citizens about the history and impacts of Christian supremacy. I also plan to talk about the prophetic power of Black Liberation Theology and spiritual concepts like wholeness, oneness, and Love in the face of injustices, inequalities, and oppression.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
The film intends to speak about ‘things that matter’, offering Love and justice in the place of the supremacist messages still found in some religious communities today.
I believe if we are to ‘claim a different future’ we must first acknowledge the past. We also have to acknowledge the present. Even today, Christian supremacists continue to justify the dehumanization of Black people through the misuse of religion and biblical texts like the curse of Ham. If we are to ‘claim a different future’ we have to interrupt supremacist narratives AND know that something different is possible. This film will examine these histories and ongoing injustices while presenting a series of voices for accountability, justice, and Love.
